My thoughts:
When conceptualizing the music video for 'Astray,' I was deeply inspired by the profound emotional journey one experiences following a painful breakup. I envisioned the narrative playing backward, starting with a person who has healed and progressively moving toward the initial heartbreak. This approach highlights the contrast between the healed state and the depths of sadness experienced during the breakup.
The idea to produce a video that runs in reverse stemmed from the desire to visually depict the internal replay of events that many people experience as they process their pain. Toward the end of the video, as the person becomes increasingly sorrowful, we witness the breakup, creating a powerful emotional impact.
One of my favorite elements of the video is the match cut from the sad to the happy person, achieved by focusing on her eyes. This transition effectively bridges the two emotional states, emphasizing the dramatic shift from despair to healing.
From the outset, I decided against a performance video featuring Aaron (the singer) and myself (the rapper). Instead, I aimed to create a narrative that closely follows the woman's raw and real emotional journey. This direct and unfiltered approach allowed us to capture the intensity of her pain and the authenticity of her healing process.
To maintain a consistent and intimate perspective, I used a fixed 35mm lens throughout the shoot. This choice provided a constant viewpoint, making the audience feel like spectators witnessing the healing—or rather unhealing—process firsthand.

While the song highlights the struggles of someone going through the breakup, it also acknowledges that the other person might be dealing with their own pain and healing journey. The video aims to reflect this duality, emphasizing that both sides experience hardship and growth.
